FINAL approval for Sydney-based Premier Cabs to begin operating on the Central Coast is expected within weeks.

Initial approval was given to Premier Cabs to enter the Central Coast's taxi market late last year.

The process stalled this year when the State Government withheld the issue of Premier's licence plates while several legal and commercial issues were dealt with.

A spokesman for NSW Transport Minister Michael Costa said yesterday the department was in the final stages of resolving the issues.

Premier Cabs managing director Peter Hyer said yesterday he was anxious for the outstanding matters to be completed.

It is expected that Premier Cabs will be issued with about 20 operating licences that will allow it to compete with Central Coast Taxis' fleet of about 80 taxis.

Central Coast Taxis has opposed the introduction of a second operator, arguing that its drivers are struggling to make ends meet and competition could cost it up to 50 jobs.
