THE TAXI DRIVERS

WOLLONGONG Radio Cabs manager Nick Katselos is not convinced a bus service would be effective, pointing out that many patrons would still need to hail a taxi once they were dropped off closer to home.

"The summer bus doesn't drop them door-to-door - so when they get unloaded at the one spot, they have to get a cab anyway, but there aren't any out in the suburbs," Mr Katselos said.

"It creates a danger to the patrons and to the general public at those drop-off points."

Mr Katselos also emphasised that there was no shortage of taxis available for hire, and said the Kembla St rank was much safer now that security guards patrolled it.

"We have more than enough cabs - often there are so many that there's not enough room for drivers to stop. We have a secure cab rank there - it works fine. There's a fair bit of protection - there are no fisticuffs and we don't get our doors kicked in," he said.
